Embryo Abortion in Intraspecific Crosses in Hibiscus syriacus

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the embryo abortion after intraspecific crosses and application potential of embryo rescue technique in hybridization breeding program in Hibiscus syriacus L.. For these purpose, fertilization rate, seed-setting rate, and fruit-abscission time were examined using twenty one crosses among 11 cultivars. Fertilization rate was determined by observing pollen tube growth into embryo sac at 5 days after pollination (DAP). There was no correlation between fertilization rate and seed setting rate, thus, it was proposed that fruit abscission and seed setting might be strongly influenced by post-fertilization mechanism. Normal embryos grew to grobular stage at 7 DAP, early-heart stage at 10 DAP, heart stage at 12 DAP, and torpedo stage at 16 DAP. Embryo abortion was observed after 5 DAP in a cross combination producing no seed with high fertilization rate.
